Professional Courses

Prudence has created these courses for those who wish to pursue a career in millinery.

Professional Courses:
5 Modules, from Beginners to Advanced.
150 hours of tuition in each module.
Modules must be taken in a chronological order.
Students may book as many or as little modules as they wish.

Module 1

Beginners millinery

Course work covered:
Millinery stitching techniques
Sizing - Pattern making
Fabric hats from flat pattern
Felt hats
Straw hats
Trimming
Flower making
Bridal head dresses and veiling

Module 2

Intermediate millinery

Course work covered:

Linings
Turbans
Draping
Blocked fabric hats
Leather hats


Module 3

Advanced millinery

Course work covered:
Wire frames
Working in fur or recycled fur
Feather hats
Ruffle hats
Lace hats
Perfect techniques and skills acquired to a professional standard 

Module 4

Hat block making

Course work covered:

Copy existing blocks
Make original shapes in spartra (where available) and buckram
Make blocks from clay
Dolly making

Module 5

Collection course 

Course work covered:
Concentrate on creating and designing a working collection of hats to a professional couture standard
Produce a capsule collection of couture hats to a professional standard that you can use as your first professional collection
You will be able to use your first professional collection to show buyers, press, potential employers, etc...

Please note

3 to 4 students maximum per class
150 hours per module
Students have one year from day of enrolment to complete each module.
No previous sewing skills required for the first module



About the classes:


  • Tea and coffee available.
  • Students may bring a lunch or snack with them to every lesson.
  • Use of all blocks, cottons, needles, pins and stiffeners are included in the price.
    Bring your own notebook, scissors, thimble, apron.
    Students purchase all straws, felts, fabrics and canvas. 
  • Classes are ongoing and can be joined at any time.
  • No previous sewing skills required for the first module.
  • Classes are taught in small groups, 3 to 4 students maximum per class.
  • Classes are taught in a relaxed atmosphere and students will work at their own pace.
  • What distinguishes these workshops from others found in London is the amount of one-to-one tuition given by Prudence

The blocks in the workroom are Prudence's own design and, therefore, remain intellectual property of Prudence. Prudence lets all students use these blocks for the purpose of study only.
